🏙️ Town Overview
Moura is a rural township in Central Queensland, located within the Banana Shire, approximately 186 km west of Gladstone and 590 km northwest of Brisbane. Nestled along the Dawson Highway beside the Dawson River, it serves as a vital waypoint between the eastern coast and Queensland’s inland mining regions.
The surrounding countryside blends expansive grazing land with open farmland and bush-covered ridges, giving Moura its outback-meets-agricultural feel.
🌾 Traditional Custodians
Moura lies on the traditional lands of the Gangulu (Kangulu) people, whose Country spans the Dawson and Fitzroy river systems. We acknowledge the Gangulu people as the Traditional Owners of this land and pay respect to their Elders—past, present, and emerging.
🕰️ Historical Background
Moura began in the mid-19th century with the establishment of Moura Station and expanded with the railway and grazing industry. From the 1960s, the discovery of coal transformed Moura into a key mining hub. It has also endured several mining tragedies that reshaped national mine safety standards.
⚙️ Current Status
Today, Moura is home to around 1,700 people, and serves as a working town with open-cut mining, grazing, and cropping as economic mainstays. It also supports a FIFO workforce and provides core services to the surrounding region.
