📜 Park Background & History
Orpheus Island National Park is located in the Palm Islands group, approximately 110 km north of Townsville and 45 km east of Ingham. The island lies within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and was declared a national park in 1960. Traditionally known to the Manbarra people as Goolboddi, the island holds cultural and environmental significance.
Named after the Royal Navy vessel HMS Orpheus, the island has a history tied to both European exploration and Aboriginal heritage. Today, it features a James Cook University research station and remains largely undeveloped, prioritising conservation of its fringing coral reefs, granite outcrops, and dry vine thickets.
