📜 Park Background & History
White Mountains National Park spans approximately 1,122 km² in inland North Queensland, located around 80 km northeast of Hughenden and 140 km southwest of Charters Towers. Established in 1990, it protects dramatic white sandstone escarpments, gorges, heathlands, and desert woodlands. The park is one of the most botanically diverse areas within the Desert Uplands, home to over 430 plant species and 51 known reptile species.
Seasonal wildflower displays occur from May to September. The park sits on the traditional lands of the Yirandhali people, with culturally significant landscapes and a rugged geology that includes Burra Range and Sawpit Gorge.
