📍 Description & Location

Old Geehi Campground is a remote riverside camping area nestled along the Swampy Plain River, south of Khancoban, just off the scenic Alpine Way. It's a peaceful spot, offering spectacular views back toward the snow-capped Main Range, and it's one of the quietest corners in the Geehi Flats region.

  • Unmarked, unpowered campsites

  • 🔥 BBQ/fire rings and picnic tables

  • ❗ BYO drinking and cooking water, firewood, and all supplies

  • 🐾 Wildlife sightings are common—kangaroos, wombats, wallabies, and platypus

  • ❄️ Closed in winter from June to October long weekends

  • 🛶 Great for fishing, swimming, and nature watching

Bookings: Free to camp, but a $6 booking fee applies. NPWS recommends booking online for groups under 20.

🛻 Vehicle Access

  • Accessible by 2WD in dry weather, but 4WD is strongly advised, especially for gear-laden rigs or wet conditions

  • Entry is via Alpine Way, then along internal dirt tracks

  • Not suitable for caravans or large RVs

The campground sits near the Old Geehi Hut, a restored dry-stone shepherd's hut, one of many in the region built in the 1940s and earlier. This area is part of Ngarigo Country, and carries a strong legacy of both Indigenous seasonal use and grazing heritage.
